Do's & Don'ts
Of an On-Site Septic System
DON'TS
- NO CIGARETTE BUTTS IN TOILETS OR SINKS
- NO GREASE DOWN DRAINS
- NO BIRTH CONTROL OR SANITARY PRODUCTS
- NO BABY WIPES OR PERSONAL HYGIENE WIPES
- NO TISSUES, PAPER TOWELS, Q-TIPS, COTTON SWABS
- DO NOT LET FAUCETS RUN, RUN, RUN
- NO MORE THAN 2 LOADS OF WASH BACK TO BACK
- NO EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF HARSH CHEMICALS, ONLY NORMAL HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS
- NO GARBAGE DISPOSALS

Never allow any type of equipment or vehicle larger than a riding mower
to run over any part of the septic system including the septic tanks.
DO'S
- HAVE SEPTIC TANK(S) AND PUMP TANK PUMPED EVERY YEAR
- INSPECT PUMP YEARLY
- USE SCOTT WHITE OR THE EQUIVALENT TOILET TISSUE
- USE A NON FIBER CONTENT TOILET TISSUE
- DYE TEST TOILETS 4 TIMES A YEAR FOR LEAKS, a toilet can leak ½
gallon per minute or 700 gallons of water per day
Feed your system a good hi count bacteria treatment every month.
Always have your pump tank lid elevated 3 or 4 inches above grade level
to avoid debris and surface water from entering the pump tank.
Good maintenance is an inexpensive gift you can give to
yourself and your family to prolong the life expectancy of your septic
system. Your home is your most prized possession.
Protect it, don't neglect it.
